Thanks for the advice!
I’m skiing on Frtischi Freerides and Garmont Xena boots, but I haven’t actually used them for backcountry skiing yet. I ventured off groomers at the village for the first time today…what a mess.
Hopefully, it won’t be too much longer until I venture out of bounds. …

I know I’m way late on this, but Lauren have you snowboarded before? You took to skiing like a duck to water, and I used to instruct snowboarding out in Tahoe and have been around snowsports my whole life, and I was very surprised at how quickly you got the fundamentals of skiing. The only reason I ask is because I’ve tried skiing myself on several occasions (started snowboarding first) and although the two are very different, so much of the understanding of where you want your weight, and how to use your edges crosses over….
Paul: I did snowboard before and yes, it did transfer. Still, I felt like I took to the knee operating table like a duck on a dinner plate. But, I’m hoping that’s behind me. If you’re not here already, I’d recommend coming to Jackson to practice that skiing you speak of. Thanks for watching.
I am so excited for you. I can feel the anxiety as you look in for the first time. I remember showing a friend Mark who had arrived here from Ohio. Thanksgiving on the pass, then his first time into Corbets. He now a great Skier and enjoys the sport for what it is. You will never forget the first drop but you will always come back for more. You go girl!
Good Luck Lauren! Looks like you’re well on your way to Corbets.
Don’t worry about the poles on the flat/groomed stuff. They are more handy in the steeps.
BTW, have you considered getting AT gear? It’s a lot lighter and more comfortable…and the snow is softer too! (grin)
