Bryan Bird-rosian talks Grouse.

Sage Grouse Beringia South Bryan Bedrosian Jackson HoleBryan Bedrosian loves birds. Or as a co-worker Peter Popinchalk said, “If Bryan could, he would have wings and live in a snow cave with his dog (Merlin).” Bryan likes listening to bird songs on his iPod, spends weekends dragging carcasses around the sage flats with which to tempt eagles, and has been seen practicing bird calls while behind the wheel of his truck, which sports a “RVN” sticker on the tailgate.

Up Close

This is basically a two-a-and-half-minute mash-up of Contemporary Dance Wyoming’s performance on Friday night at the Center for the Arts. The performance itself was an hour long, and engrossing throughout. To see one of the full segments of “Up Close,” click here for a Youtube vid.

The music is from “Alarm Will Sound,” and was featured in the performance.

Bravo to Babs Case and her dancers!

Gelande Quaffing, Cont’d

The Gelande Quaffing Championships take place next week, on February 27, aprés ski, at the Mangy Moose. It’s gonna be big. Seems like the coverage of the G.Q. Comp at the OR show has fired up the competitors, who include a gearweenie squad from Backcountry.com, some thirsty — and burly — Montanans from Big Sky Brewing Co., and TGR. According to team captain Tate McDowell, TGR’s team is practicing today. “But we’re more focused on taking quaffing to the big mountains,” says McDowell.

Stay tuned for more coverage of the new/old craze sweeping the world of aprés.

It is Sunday morning. The morning of Coney Classic Fun-Jor, number eight, 2008.

I have an hour before I greet the Jackson Hole Nordic Center.

Coney Classic 2008 Jackson Hole ski-jorLike Coney chasing a ball of aluminum foil, I slide on long underwear, black. Like Coney eating bok choy stalks, I slap on a skirt, black. Like Coney itching with lice, I stick on a sweater, black.

Lifting Coney into truck. Too late for breakfast. I am in all black on Coney’s Day. Before I leave, I staple white fur polka dots all over my blackness. Bright, light, tactile, singing spots of hope.

Anybody heard the album? Got a review?

When the ship lands it is a wee bit hectic. The rotors are shearing the air above my head, chiseling away at my eardrums. The last client out hasn’t dropped to the ground as ordered; I grab his shoulder and herd him into the huddle by the whirly bird’s skid. I unload the basket and look around — clients situated, basket closed, door shut, thumbs up. Under the wash of its rotors I watch as Eight Zero Romeo takes flight and is gone.
