Skate Sunday

Weary of work, tired from climbing yesterday, Indian summer outside. Ah, to hell with it, I’m going skateboarding.

Above, a new favorite skate vid, from Japan. Sick skating, shooting, and editing.

Mannied

christian burch the manny files

Words and pics by Scotty Craighead

When I was in sixth grade, Christian Burch, my male nanny, or manny, drove my friend Taylor and I to our first school dance. On the way he joked about coming inside and embarrassing us. When we arrived he didn’t get out of the car with us, so we thought that we were home free and headed for the doors of the school. About half way there we heard Christian shout, “Hey, Scotty and Taylor! If your diarrhea comes back just call me!”

Jimmy, Conrad, and Renan go for the Shark’s Fin

meru peak shark's fin jimmy chin conrad anker renan ozturkLast week, Victor resident/local man-about-town/sexiest-Chinaman-in-America Jimmy Chin left for the Indian Himalaya, to attempt a great big badass alpine climb with fellow North Face hardmen Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk.

Their objective is the Shark’s Fin of Meru, which, according to this Alpinist article, is still unclimbed and the apple of many an alpinist’s eye. Conrad attempted the line in 2003 with Bruce Miller and Doug Chabot, but they were turned back by deep snow.

You can follow their progress at their expedition blog, where they’ve already posted a handful of videos (edited and uploaded by Renan in the field) and Conrad’s pithy prose. Don’t see too many images from JC on the site yet, but that’s presumably because he’s still wading through the thousands of breathtaking images he recently shot at Burning Man for his clients Hand-i-Wipes and Bartles and Jaymes Wine Spritzers.

Good luck, you guys, and climb safe!

Sick Skate Flicks

When taking breaks from editing video, I often cruise the net looking for short flicks that inspire and amaze. Lately, I’ve been fascinated by skateboarding videos. Above is the very best downhill skating video I’ve ever seen. These guys are hauling ass in polyester suits, handing a high def camera back and forth as they rip down a steep road in southern California. Skeeeetchy.

More vids after the jump.

Building the Burn

We’re still feeling the burn, having shedded a few brain cells out there on the playa. Sure hope they grow back. In the meantime, check out this video about the people who built the art for the burn. (My favorite? The Tower of Babylon — a 100-foot-tall steel skyscraper that was built in five days.)

Coming soon, a Snaz video about the Playa’s most artful artcar — Jackson Hole’s own Madame Astrolabe.
