Headlamp manufacturer Princeton Tec is running a cool contest on Flickr, asking outdoorsy folks to submit their best shots involving headlamps. The competition is already pretty fierce. This shot, The Snaz’s fave so far, comes from Flickr user Wilkinsbb.
Contest categories include Best Overall, Best Cooking, Best Climbing, Most Dramatic, Most Creative, Best Action, with prizes awarded for each category, and an MSR Mo Room 2 tent going to the best overall. Strangely, there’s no card-playing category, but we like this shot for the off-kilter composition, the fire, the sandaled feet, and the dog. Nice work, Vanweelden, for packing it all in.
There’s also no Best Firearms category, which this shot, by Flickr user Inua, would surely win.
Of course, given that this is a headlamp photo contest, there are plenty of “tents aglow during a starry night” shots, which are kind of overdone these days. This sunrise shot by Alexandre Buisse, is a more creative variation.
This shot, also by Flickr user Inua, comes from some sort of heinous “portage expedition” across Admiralty Island in southeast Alaska. Lotsa brown bears, which is why this concerned-looking fellow is glancing over his shoulder. Awesome shot.

This shot kinda makes us want to gag. So awesome. On the misery scale, caving seems even worse than climbing, as it would seem to combine claustrophobia, the potential for drowning, and the dark. Superfun. This entry comes from Merlin Adventures.
“Got Lights on Heads” contest winners will be picked by “a board of talented outdoor industy gurus with a knack for killer images.” The contest goes until August 31, not August 14, as the contest and Flickr pages claim, so you’ve got almost a whole month to get out there in the dark, flick on the headlamp, and create a masterpiece.
