Atop the ridge are Jesse Logan, Wally McFarlane, and Willie Kern, who are studying and mapping the spread of pine beetles amongst the whitebark pines of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Most of the trees in this image are whitebark pine. The northern Absarokas and the Beartooth Plateau are home to some of the healthiest stands of whitebarks, though Jesse, Wally, and Willie all remarked that the forest in the basin under Index and Pilot Peaks, in the right portion of the image, includes many more red, dying trees this year than last.
